In art, negative space is defined as the area around and between what is usually considered the main attraction. In music it is the rest between notes, in dance it is stillness or transition between movements, in visual art it is the background that supports the foreground. The silence, stillness, and space are what help inform meaning in the work of art. Similarly, the moments between our actions and reactions are what inform the choices we make... if we dare to notice them!
In life it is the thoughts, opinions, and strategies that are “the space” that help inform our actions, and therefore our experiences. When someone can notice their autopilot reactions and consider other, intentional options, there is opportunity for immense personal growth. If many people can consider other intentional options for actions/reactions, our group culture can transform for the better.
